IHI, Japan's aerospace giant, is eyeing a collaboration with Kuva Space, a Finnish startup, to bolster its Earth observation capabilities. This partnership could see IHI integrate Kuva's cutting-edge hyperspectral satellites into its ambitious 100-strong, multi-sensor constellation. The deal, announced in July, focuses on the Hyperfield-2 satellites, which extend Kuva's technology into the short-wave infrared spectrum, enhancing material identification through spectral fingerprints. This move is a strategic response to Japan's growing need for a secure and resilient space capability, with hyperspectral data offering unique insights beyond conventional imagery.
The agreement includes a potential manufacturing partnership in Japan, with IHI aiming to secure orders in 2027, coinciding with Kuva's planned demonstration of the Hyperfield-2 satellite in orbit. This follows the successful deployment of two 12-kilogram Hyperfield-1 cubesats over the past two years. Kuva's ambitious plan is to deploy 100 satellites by 2030, enabling sub-daily monitoring across East Asia. IHI's involvement will grant them proportional coverage and the benefits of the wider constellation's revisit performance.
IHI's interest in Kuva's technology is part of a broader strategy. They have already ordered four synthetic aperture radar satellites from Iceye and are exploring partnerships with SatVu and Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) for thermal imaging and other contributions to the constellation. The initial plan includes optical, radio-frequency payloads, and VDES, a ship-to-shore communication system. This multi-faceted approach underscores IHI's commitment to building a comprehensive and capable Earth observation constellation.
